SCOPIC radiopaque polymers enable the detection of foreign body contaminants by X-Ray inspection

X-Ray Detectable Additives & Polymers

X-Ray detectable (radiopaque) additives are increasingly used in the food and pharmaceutical industries, but also in dental, medical and veterinary devices where products need to be visible on X-ray equipment.

Dental implants, gauzes and catheters manufactured with in-built radiopacity can be identified under fluoroscopy for misplacement or positioning purposes. The production industries are also moving towards this technology for its precision in detecting buried fragments of foreign material.

When offering solutions for X-ray detectable polymers, special powder additives are combined into existing base polymer carriers to increase material density. If designed and developed correctly then, when end products are manufactured from the radiopaque material, they will be strongly differentiated from specific food product(s) by an X-ray machine and allow for successful foreign body detection.

SCOPIC can offer masterbatches/compounds incorporating additives which will impart either metal or X-ray detection in isolation or the possibility to offer detection by both methods in one product.

The filler content in detectable products can cause brittleness, so we run extensive technical testing in-house, including X-ray (through the use of our Minebea X-ray Inspection System), tensile and impact testing.
We can modify formulations using your base material until we reach the perfect solution.

Detection Using X-Ray Imagery

Detection of ‘foreign bodies’ by X-ray is reliant upon the following:

  • Thickness
  • Density
  • Atomic mass number
  • X-ray equipment settings
  • Product running through the detector

Due to these factors, detectability should always be confirmed with the actual combination of X-ray machine and product under standard operating conditions.

SCOPIC can offer masterbatches/compounds incorporating additives which will impart either metal or X-ray detection in isolation or the possibility to offer detection by both methods in one product.

Manufacturing & Testing

We have in-house extrusion and injection moulding capabilities to allow production of custom masterbatches and compounds, as well as moulded test pieces.

X-ray detectability can be checked on our Minebea X-ray Inspection System.

Mechanical testing can be performed on unfilled and detectable compounds to confirm the effect of the additives. Tensile testing as well as impact testing can be undertaken.

MFI (Melt Flow Index) levels of compounds can be confirmed on an extrusion plastometer.

UV exposure testing can be carried out if necessary.
